WHERE WILL THE SYSTEM BE USED? - CORROSION PROTECTION

Cable Trays, cable ladders, supports, fittings e.t.c. are available with corrosion protection for installing them in various environments:

For dry room atmosphere: pre-galvanized sheet steel (Continuously hot-dip   zinc coated mild steel strip and sheet for cold forming) acc. to ΕΝ 10346  Designation (PG) in our catalogue.

This galvanized steel sheet is obtained by immersing a soft steel sheet in a zinc bath at tem peratures of 450 ºC to 460 ºC. The zinc coating acquired that way is between 100 g/m2 and 275 g/m2 on both sides, which corresponds to a thickness of between 6,5μm and 21 μm. When a galvanized sheet is punched or cut the edges of the metal are protected by cathodic corrosion protection.

For dry room atmosphere: electro plated (galvanized) after manufacture acc. to DIN 50961. Designation (EG) in our catalogue.

Items are made of steel which after manufacture are zinc electro plated. This galvanization process is used for small components such as bolts, nuts washers, threaded rods e.t.c.Thus, the items, are being coated with a homogenous zinc layer of appr. 2,5 to 10 μm. On threads the layer thickness is usually less than on accessible surfaces. Additional protection is achieved by chromating.

For damp atmosphere and outdoors: hot-dip galvanized after manufacture (Hot dip galvanized coating on fabricated iron and steel articles) acc. to EN ISO 1461. Designation (DG) in our catalogue.

Items are made of bright quality cold rolled sheet steel which after manufacture are dipped one by one into a liquid zinc bath (temperatures 450 ºC to 460 ºC). Thus, the item including all cut edges, is being coated with a homogenous zinc layer of 350 - 420 g/m2 on both sides (= 50 - 60 μm). Hot-dip galvanized items have a much greater resistance to corrosion compared to pre-galvanized items, making them suitable for installation outdoors or in humid indoor conditions.

For use in very aggressive environments and the food industry: stainless steel (grade 304 or 316 – European 1.4301 or 1.4571 respectively) items can be used. Stainless steel items are available upon request.

For use in very aggressive environments: an added corrosion protection of epoxy resin coating can be applied on hot dipped galvanized items can as follows:

  • Surface preparation according to ISO 12944 Part 4.
  • Prime coat: a layer of min. 15 μm wash primer.
  • Intermediate coat: application of a layer of min. 50 μm with 2 components polyamide cured Epoxy acc. to MIL-C 82407, B-class spec.
  • Top coat: application of a layer of min 75 μm with 2 components polyurethane polyester resins, cured by aliphatic isocyanate resin according MIL-C-85285
  • Total coating thickness approx. 200 μm.

LIFE SPAN

An exact answer to the question of the anticipated life span of a coated item cannot be given as it depends on too many factors. Nevertheless, extensive empirical observations have yielded the following average annual losses of zinc coats in various environments:

 

 

Given the above values the expected life span of any type of coated item can be calculated. In any case we strongly recommend the use of items hot-dip galvanized after manufacture (hot dip galvanized coating on fabricated iron and steel articles) acc. to EN ISO 1461 in every installation.
